Price Gouging

2/14/2026

The newcomers were none other than Kade Santos and his personal bodyguard. Ignoring the crowd’s stares, they deliberately bypassed everyone and walked straight over to Evan Yang and Tanner Shaw. After smiling at them, Kade turned to the seller and said, “I want what he just ordered.”

Tanner Shaw, already at odds with the Santos Family, saw Kade Santos trying to cut in. Even if Evan Yang didn’t want the stone, Tanner would still fight Kade for it—he was determined to oppose him to the end. He immediately sneered, “My brother wants this, so you’d better pick another.”

“And what if I insist on having his?” Kade Santos sneered coldly.

“That’s your problem. Everyone here knows my brother chose it first. If you insist, you’re the one in the wrong.” Tanner snorted coldly.

Evan Yang hadn’t expected Kade Santos to stir up trouble now—clearly just trying to embarrass him and Tanner Shaw. But Evan knew this wasn’t an ordinary stone, and he was ready and determined to fight for it, no matter what.

“Your brother? You mean him? He hasn’t paid yet—who says it’s already his?” Kade Santos smiled, noticing Evan Yang still holding the bag of spirit crystals.

“You haven’t paid either.” Tanner Shaw glanced at Evan Yang’s bag and retorted.

“Then let’s settle it fairly.” Kade Santos smiled.

“Fairly?” Evan Yang had never heard of a ‘fair’ way to pick stones. The seller chimed in, “Since that’s the case, let’s do this: whoever offers the higher price gets it!”

As soon as those words were spoken, Kade Santos looked at Evan Yang and Tanner Shaw with a deep, confident smile.

Evan Yang frowned. Whoever offered the higher price would get it—but he was certain this stone wasn’t ordinary and had no intention of giving up. At worst, he’d just resort to his old tricks. Before Tanner Shaw could start cursing Kade Santos, Evan cut in, “Fine. Then how much are you bidding?”

Kade Santos smirked, “You’re new here, aren’t you? Don’t you know the rules? The seller decides the bidding.” Then he turned to the seller.

The seller said, “Each bid must increase by at least ten thousand.” He looked at the bidders calmly, secretly amused: “Let them fight—either way, I profit.”

Kade Santos smiled, “Alright, I bid 1.1 million.”

This was clearly a move to put Evan Yang and Tanner Shaw in an awkward spot.

The crowd erupted in excitement; Evan Yang and Tanner Shaw exchanged glances. Tanner said to Evan, “Bid as high as you want. No matter what, I’ll help you get it. Treat it as a loan—pay me back when you can.”

Evan Yang felt deeply moved by Tanner Shaw’s loyalty and bid, “1.2 million.”

The crowd was shocked—such a bold bid! Some wondered if Tanner Shaw was actually the one calling the price.

Various suspicions arose among the crowd. Kade Santos hadn’t expected Evan Yang to jump so quickly to a high bid, but he smiled and said, “1.3 million.”

Evan Yang smiled, “1.5 million.”

It wasn’t even his own money, but Evan Yang was determined to get the stone, even if it meant paying a huge price. He was confident he could earn enough spirit crystals to repay Tanner Shaw.

“1.5 million? Tanner, you must have a lot of private savings,” Kade Santos mocked, clearly ridiculing him for letting his friend bid so recklessly.

Tanner Shaw didn’t care at all. “If my friend wants something, whether it’s me or the whole Shaw Family, we’ll back him to the end. If you’ve got the guts, keep bidding against my friend.”

Now it was Kade Santos's turn to frown. Tanner Shaw was being way too bold—clearly intent on helping Evan Yang win, with the Shaw Family as his backing.

Kade Santos had meant to embarrass Evan Yang and Tanner Shaw, but now he was stuck. If he backed down, he’d lose face; if he kept going, he’d be spending a fortune on what was probably just a worthless stone—no way it held an Immortal artifact.

Evan Yang smiled, “Are you raising the bid to 1.5 million or not?”

Tanner Shaw smiled, “Not daring to bid anymore, huh? Still think you can snatch things from my friend?”

The crowd burst into laughter. Kade Santos’s face turned ugly. He gritted his teeth, “1.6 million!”

Evan Yang smiled, “1.8 million.”

Kade Santos’s face darkened. He glanced at the seller, then at Evan Yang and Tanner Shaw, and finally forced a smile. “Fine, you win.”

He said it lightly, but it left an impression on Evan. Evan smiled, "Come on, let’s go see what we got for twice the price."

"Forget it, you go check it out yourself. I’m going to tell my dad about today—and maybe see if I can get some pocket money out of him thanks to you." Tanner laughed awkwardly.

Evan was speechless, then laughed.

"Heh, if the bidding kept going, I wouldn’t have had enough crystals to pay. Good thing he got scared off." Tanner chuckled.
