Field of Bones Pursuit

Chapter 1490

It should be noted that Reina's spellcasting and mastery over magic are truly formidable. With a dozen Frostbind spells, she formed a semicircular encirclement—the effect was neither excessive nor lacking, just perfect.

But even the slightest unexpected deviation at this critical moment caused one Frostbind to trigger prematurely. That early detonation set off a chain reaction—every Frostbind spell went off ahead of time...

Originally, the Frostbind spells were meant to freeze the Blood Lich, but instead, they turned into a white mist that blocked his way. The intended purpose was lost, and now the Blood Lich had an easier escape route.

The Blood Lich only needed to force his way through the Frostbind spells. After all, their power wasn’t much of a threat to him—he could just throw up a Death Shield and walk right through.

But now, would the Blood Lich dare to do that? Absolutely not...

In reality, the Blood Lich was already at a loss. Who knew what other mishaps might happen if he tried to cross that frosty mist? And Hubert was already closing in from behind.

Either cross the frosty mist, or face Hubert head-on. No matter how you looked at it, going through the mist seemed like the lesser evil...

After countless years, the Blood Lich had far more experience than anyone here, yet he’d never faced a situation like this. He was genuinely baffled.

It was like a two-meter-tall boxing champion facing a tiny crack in the ground, barely ten centimeters wide. Normally, he’d step over it without a second thought—eyes closed, even. Stepping on the crack wouldn’t matter; it was smaller than half his foot.

Behind him, a five-year-old brat was waving his fists and chasing after him—and then, His Excellency the Boxing Champion hesitated...

Afraid of falling into that little crack, and also scared of getting beaten to death by the five-year-old brat behind him...

That was the situation—the Blood Lich didn't make a choice right away, but hesitated...

From afar, Leon Merlin couldn't bear to watch any longer. A dignified level forty-nine lich, the infamous Blood Lich of the Undead Plane—even in Northend, his name alone was enough to inspire fear.

He once fought the King of Undead, and to this day remains a legendary powerhouse who ignores the king's orders. He holds a vast territory by himself, and doesn't command an undead army—just his name alone is enough to keep the mindless undead of the plane from wandering into his domain.

Yet such a powerhouse is now being chased like a mad dog by an orc whose intelligence barely passes, whose head is all muscle, and who's only level forty-four. Even Leon Merlin felt a bit sorry for him...

In fact, both Alonzo and Agalon were wearing strange expressions, almost as if they could empathize...

The Blood Lich hesitated for a moment, then suddenly waved his hand and summoned three Bone Champions, each at least level forty-seven. The three skeletal warriors, gripping bone greatswords, materialized in midair and howled as they charged at Hubert...

Meanwhile, the Blood Lich braved the Glacial Veil with his Death Shield up...

The fastest Bone Champion swung its greatsword carelessly, clashing hard with Hubert's Slaughter. Hubert's body traced a fading silhouette in midair and was instantly sent flying.

"Damn it, call me daddy! Just wait—once I finish off this old corpse, I'm going to beat you senseless today..."

Hubert was so furious his nostrils puffed smoke, grinding his teeth as he kept chasing the Blood Lich.

A few minutes later, the Blood Lich was covered in wounds. His robe—definitely a top-tier True Spirit artifact—had somehow malfunctioned and was now ruined. One arm was chopped off by a Bone Champion, and when he tried to grab it back, the remaining upper half of his body got hacked off again. Basically, everything below his chest was gone...

It looked like an old corpse with just one arm and only the upper torso left, drifting through the sky.

Another mishap—he emerged from the Glacial Veil, then suddenly vanished, only to reappear burrowing up from the ground, right beside Marianna...

The Blood Lich's sudden appearance stunned everyone. Leon was especially startled, instantly flinging a Mana Hand—its crystalline palm slapped toward the Blood Lich, but missed by a hair and grazed his shoulder...

The Blood Lich's left shoulder and arm were gone, and everything below his chest had vanished too. Thanks to the Curse of Misfortune, Leon's spell hadn't hit him at all.

And the Blood Lich seemed to know this already. Between him and Leon stood Marianna, not yet at the Sky Rank. In an instant, the Blood Lich grabbed her, shrouding Marianna in death energy.

"Everyone stand down, or I'll turn this poor little girl into an undead..."

The Blood Lich's voice was both suppressed and furious. Leon immediately retreated, his gaze a little strange. Only Hubert charged forward, roaring as if he wanted to tear the Blood Lich apart.

"Hubert, don't go over there."

Hubert's eyes were bloodshot, teeth bared as he glared at the Blood Lich. After a few seconds, he uncharacteristically calmed down, his face twisted in a sinister, menacing glare.

"Old corpse, if my daughter loses a single hair, I'll smash your skull."

Even Andefa looked at Hubert in surprise—he was rarely this serious. Normally, Hubert was always beating up Marianna, but that's orc tradition: if the kid misbehaves, beat them; if they're not serious, beat them; if you're bored, beat them...

Orcs are all thick-skinned and tough—the more they get beaten, the stronger they get. Especially Hubert, who always believed his strength and defense were two or three levels higher than his actual rank, all thanks to years of getting beaten.

Such a simple worldview...

Leon subtly pulled Hubert back, as if he were obeying the Blood Lich's command.

"Dekrise, let the girl go. I promise, after we finish you off, we'll go our separate ways—no one will bother anyone again."

The Blood Lich was nearly insane, death energy wrapping around Marianna's body. Even if she inherited Hubert's monstrous strength, she couldn't break free from his grip.

"Damn humans, give me back my soul, give me the Book of Death, and I'll let this little orc go..."

Hearing the Blood Lich's words, Leon retreated even faster, constantly backing away. Hubert, not the brightest, still followed Leon. Reina hovered in the distant sky, not approaching...

Alonzo and Agalon, two old foxes, saw Leon's reaction—not trying to save Marianna, just retreating—and seemed genuinely afraid the Blood Lich might do something drastic.

The two exchanged glances and quietly backed away as well...

The three deans of Starry Sky Academy followed suit—if Agalon was retreating, so were they.

The Blood Lich still hadn't noticed that Leon was backing away faster and faster, seemingly losing his composure and genuinely afraid of any reckless move.

When Leon had retreated over a kilometer, he suddenly noticed the death energy—the gray mist covering Marianna—was wrapping her up completely, leaving only her face exposed...

Marianna's face was flushed red, her teeth gritted. Then, as the gray mist reached her nose, it twitched twice.

Seeing this, Leon didn't hesitate—he turned and ran, not caring whether the Curse of Misfortune was still active...

Agalon and Alonzo reacted quickest to Leon's movement—they didn't care why he ran, just followed suit...

Then Hubert, with his barely-passing intelligence, hesitated for a moment and ran after Leon. He had no idea why Leon was running, but he knew one thing: following Lord Merlin was never wrong...

When the Blood Lich saw this, he was truly dumbfounded. For all his time studying humans and Leon, he never expected Leon would just abandon Marianna and run, leaving her behind without a second thought...
