Chance Encounter in the Library

2/14/2026

As soon as Yolanda Fang spoke, Mr. Zheng glanced at Victor Feng, who was still writhing on the ground, then looked at Evan Lin, whom Yolanda was shielding behind her. His mind gradually cooled down.

Victor Feng is Class 7’s PE rep—compared to Evan Lin, who looks small and skinny, Victor’s build is much more robust.

If someone said Victor Feng could mess Evan Lin up this badly, Mr. Zheng would absolutely believe it. But if you flipped the situation, he started to hesitate.

“It was this Evan Lin guy who did it—everyone here saw it. Yolanda Fang, are you really going to lie through your teeth?” Trevor Liu stepped forward, sneering.

“You’re all in it together. Do you think the teacher’s an idiot? Like he’d believe anything you say?” Yolanda Fang shot back, glaring at Trevor Liu without backing down.

Mia Chen glanced at Yolanda Fang, who was arguing fiercely for Evan Lin, then looked at Evan standing behind Yolanda with a totally indifferent attitude. She couldn’t help feeling a bit self-mocking.

Even if I hadn’t gone to get the teacher, it looks like nothing would’ve happened to him anyway. I’m just being extra here. Compared to me—a regular girl from an ordinary family—he’s got Yolanda Fang, who’s popular and well-connected, and their friendship is way stronger than anything I could offer.

"Are you okay? Hang in there—the ambulance will be here soon." Mia Chen softly comforted Victor Feng, glancing at his right calf. Her pretty face went pale.

Victor Feng's right calf looked downright horrifying.

If Evan Lin really did this, then he’d seriously gone too far!

If Evan Lin really did this, then he’d seriously gone too far!

At that thought, Mia suddenly looked up and glared hard at Evan Lin, who still looked totally unconcerned.

Evan Lin happened to look at Mia Chen just then. Meeting her eyes, he nodded slightly and even gave a faint smile.

“I’ll investigate this matter thoroughly. Right now, our priority is to wait for the ambulance and get Victor Feng to the hospital,” Mr. Zheng coughed, trying to stabilize the situation before deciding on next steps.

When something big happens, you have to tamp it down first—otherwise, his monthly bonus might go down the drain.

“If there’s nothing else, everyone disperse—go on, class is starting soon. Get back to your classrooms!” Mr. Zheng ordered.

“Lucky break for you,” Tyson Liu looked at Evan Lin, his smile half-mocking. “But nobody stays lucky forever.”

“And you, Yolanda Fang—today’s little incident, I’ll settle with you later. Who knows, maybe we’ll have some things to talk about.” Tyson Liu licked his lips, gave Yolanda a long look, then turned and walked off.

The students from Class 5 and Class 7 all followed after them, leaving together.

"Let's go, there's nothing left to watch." Yolanda Fang grabbed Evan Lin's hand and led him away.

Only Victor Feng, still groaning on the ground, Mr. Zheng anxiously standing to the side, two security guards, and Mia Chen crouched beside Victor with a complicated expression remained.

...

"Hey, where are you dragging me?" Evan Lin asked helplessly as Yolanda Fang tugged his sleeve.

"Somewhere private," Yolanda Fang replied, ignoring the curious stares from others.

Walking with a knockout like Yolanda Fang, Evan could feel at least ten jealous stares burning into him.

"What, we can’t talk here? Gotta find a private spot? Someone’s gonna get the wrong idea," Evan teased, finding Yolanda pretty loyal.

"You worried about rumors? I’m not scared, so what’s your problem?" Yolanda Fang rolled her eyes at him.

Yolanda dragged Evan to the school library, which was pretty empty at this hour. She found a corner and shoved him into a seat.

"What’s up?" Evan asked, seeing Yolanda’s serious face across from him.

"You’re in trouble," Yolanda said slowly, noticing how Evan looked totally unfazed.

"Oh, got it," Evan nodded.

"That’s all you’ve got?" Yolanda muttered, frustrated by how chill Evan was.

"I just helped you get out of Tyson Liu’s mess, but like he said, I can protect you for a while, not forever." Yolanda was extra annoyed by Evan’s laid-back reply.

It’s his problem, but I’m the one stressing out? Feels like the emperor’s not worried, but the eunuch is.

"Yeah, I agree. Without your help, I’d be toast next time. Kinda sad to think about," Evan nodded, still looking totally chill.

Even at Qi Refining level one, handling those punks isn’t hard. Once I hit level two, I could take them with one hand, Evan thought, noticing Yolanda was about to blow her top.

"I’m only helping you because of Lynn Chen. Seriously, you should take a few days off. School’s almost out, so just skip finals. It’s better than getting beat up," Yolanda said.

"Besides, your grades aren’t great anyway. Skipping finals wouldn’t hurt."

If Tyson Liu really loses it, I might not be able to protect Evan. If we were off campus, things could’ve gone way worse, Yolanda thought.

"Okay, okay, I get it. But aren’t you worried Ethan Yi will get mad if you care so much?" Evan said, not taking it seriously.

"What do you expect me to do? I can't just watch you get stomped by Tyson Liu and his crew. I'm not that kind of person. Besides, I said you’re my friend, and I meant it."

"But since you know I like Ethan Yi, could you stop causing me trouble? You think I actually want to deal with your mess?" Yolanda said, resting her chin on her hands and fluttering her eyes.

Sunlight streamed through the library windows, catching the chestnut strands of Yolanda’s hair and scattering light.

Evan watched Yolanda in silence, the mood between them growing calm and quiet.

Suddenly, Yolanda’s phone started buzzing.

Yolanda pulled out her phone, saw the caller ID, and her face lit up. She jumped up from her seat, “No more chit-chat, I’m outta here. You stay put and head back later.”

"Don’t forget what I told you! And honestly, transferring schools wouldn’t be a bad idea. Tyson Liu’s crew isn’t something you can handle." Yolanda waved at Evan and jogged out with her phone.

No need to guess—obviously, that call was from Ethan Yi.

Watching Yolanda dash out of the library, Evan got up and walked over to the bookshelves.

Brightsea No. 2 High’s library was huge. Unlike other schools, it had practice problems for every subject from seventh grade to senior year, and the question bank was updated every year.

Evan wasn’t in a hurry to go back to class. He spotted a book called High School Olympiad Math Problems and reached for it.

Before Evan’s hand could touch the book, a pale, slender hand grabbed it first.

Evan turned and saw Rachel Liu, who’d just been in the cafeteria with Buck Niu.

Rachel frowned at Evan, her eyes full of disgust—obviously thinking he’d camped out here just to wait for her.

"Can you even understand this book?" Rachel asked coolly.

"Nope, just flipping through." Evan said casually, picking up a different Olympiad math book and heading to a desk without another glance at Rachel.

He’s just trying to get my attention with this lame move. So childish, Rachel thought, frowning as she sat down.

Rachel picked up her book and moved to the other side, putting plenty of distance between herself and Evan.

Evan sat down and started working through the problems.

Last lifetime, math problems looked like alien script. Now I see—no matter the type, it’s just formulas getting more complicated until a simple question becomes a competition problem.

"These problems are actually kind of fun," Evan muttered.

Every time he tackled a problem, Evan’s mind stayed perfectly calm—thanks to his cultivation. Back when Lin Jiuxuan opened the Heavenly Gate in the Tribulation Stage, he was one step from immortality. Compared to the secrets of the Dao, math was child’s play.

At first Evan flipped pages slowly, but soon his speed picked up. Before long, every classic Olympiad problem crumbled under his gaze.

Rachel Liu was stumped by a problem. As she looked up, she saw Evan flipping pages like lightning.

Just like every other guy—trying to get close to me, Rachel thought.

That Olympiad book is full of real competition problems. No one can read that fast—he probably doesn’t get it at all, Rachel thought.

Math competition’s next semester. I can’t afford distractions, Rachel reminded herself.

Rachel made up her mind not to look at Evan again.

After skimming the whole workbook, Evan closed his eyes, mind racing as he digested every problem, then slowly opened them again.

"These problems are way too easy," Evan thought.

"If only there were some tougher problems."

Evan sighed, put the book back on the shelf, and left the library.

As he passed Rachel Liu, Evan didn’t even glance her way—not even out of the corner of his eye.
